What To Do If You Run Out Of Gas

Sooner or later, you will probably run out of gas. And, the chances are if it hasn’t happened to you yet, it probably will do one day!

Often the mistake of a newbie driver, the truth is that no one is immune from this classic error.

So, if you find yourself fresh out of gas, by the side of the road, here’s how to handle the situation.

DON’T PANIC

The first thing to do is not to allow yourself to panic.

Keep calm and try and find out whereabouts you are. If you are not familiar with the area, try and think back to recent landmarks and what is in the vicinity.

FIND THE NEAREST GAS STATION

Yes, this is obvious stuff. If you have a navigation system on board, this can help you locate the nearest gas station.

Of course, so can your cell phone.

Should you be without either device, you might want to ask a passer-by or find a payphone.

RING ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE

If you are in a recovery organization, now is the time to get your money’s worth from it!

The tow company or recovery organization will be able to send someone to help you refuel. Many companies now run roadside patrols simply to help stranded motorists out in tight spots, like this.

CAN YOU WALK TO THE NEAREST GAS STATION?

If the nearest gas station is not too far, it might be quicker to walk there yourself and get a can of gas to take back to your car.

Being in a city location will obviously make this more likely as an option, than being stranded out in the sticks somewhere.

DON’T BE TEMPTED TO HITCH A RIDE

Although most of our tips are about what to do if you run out of gas at the side of the road, there is also some very important advice about what not to do as well.

Number one on the list of bad ideas is accepting a ride from a stranger.

Although you might want to ask a passer-by where you are and how to get to the nearest gas station, you should not let yourself hitch a ride with them.

Don’t allow yourself to be tempted to get into a car with a total unknown, it could be dangerous!

If you are not in a roadside assistance association, you should consider joining one today!
